Finding prospects has got to be the most God-awful, painful part of any business!
I mean, who loves to go searching and scrounging for people to sell too. I know I can’t stand it.I’d rather eat a bowl full of peas, one at a time, with my hands.
Before you read any further, let’s get one thing straight – I’m no different than you are. I hate spending my money on advertising that MIGHT work, and to top that off - I hate anything that even slightly resembles cold calling. Oh, I’ve done some cold calling in my time and I’ve been on the receiving end of more than my share of “another salesman” stares.
There is nothing worse than getting the “another salesman” stare and then……… attending a seminar the next day on how to develop a positive attitude. That’ll mess with your head.
Can’t somebody invent a way that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg? Isn’t there a way that we can make our phones just ring with people that want to buy?
These are the questions I had. Maybe you do too.
I’ve had my own painting business, sold: alarm systems, AAA memberships, promotional items (still do) and have even been involved in a couple MLM’s over the past 17 years.
In every case I was the head prospect finder. You think I would have just taken a job so I didn’t have to go-a-prospecting. Well, guess what I hate more than prospecting? A job!

My daughter was too young to really understand the massive burden I had just placed on my family.
It was at that point that I fine-tuned my prospecting techniques. Know why? It wasn’t because I was a prospecting guru, rather, it was because I didn’t have the option to spend money on advertising and more importantly……………I was scared to death! Eight years later my distributorship grosses over $200,000 in sales annually. And to think, I’ve never advertised in the yellow pages, a newspaper or magazine, and I’ve yet to advertise on television or the radio.

Referrals - The Right Way To Ask For Them (pg. 17)
Do you ask for referrals? If you don't, you're making a big......huge.......mistake. After asking for a referral, do most people reply with this answer? - "Not right off the top of my head."
Don't you hate that answer? What do you say now without being pushy? Well, it's not what you say now, rather how you ask for a referral in the first place. You can learn how to obtain solid referrals by asking the "right way."
All you have to do is focus your question so your prospect can answer you easily with the answer you'd like. Instead of asking- who else might benefit from these products/services as you have?
Ask your new customer a question like this - Which 2 or 3 of your neighbors might also benefit from these products/services as you have?
We all know hundreds of people and if we are asked to refer some of them, it's difficult to do so because the mind doesn't process the information fast enough. On the other hand if we are asked to refer ONLY 2 or 3 of our neighbors, we can do just that in a matter of seconds.
When asked a pinpointed direct question, the mind responds in kind.
Here’s another example. Who was the last person you talked with from your graduating high school class? Before you completed reading that sentence you have already thought of whom it was.
Ask for referrals the right way. Don't be general - be specific. That’s all it takes!
